p73: the immunological and neuroimmunological mechanisms of traumatic brain injury

abstract
cortical spreading depression (csd) are associated with dramatic failure of brain ion homeostasis, efflux of excitatory amino acids from nerve cells, increased energy metabolism and changes in cerebral blood flow. there is strong clinical and experimental evidence to suggest that csd is involved in the mechanism of migraine, stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage and traumatic brain injury. therefore, in the present study, we used the spreading depression model to investigate the effects of repeated spreading depression on peripheral and central adaptive immune responses. moreover, we studied the effect of repetitive spreading depression on dark neuron density and expression of gabaa α and β, receptors. the results of the present study demonstrate that repeated spreading depression in rats induced elevated lymphocyte proliferation, ifn-γ, pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines in peripheral and central levels. brain assays also demonstrated reduced alterations in gabaa α and β, gad and hsp70 expression and enhanced the number of dark neurons. the findings could help to explain the interrelatedness of adaptive immunity, peripheral inflammation, and traumatic brain injury.

full textNeuropsychological and Neuropsychiatric Deficits Following Traumatic Brain Injury: Common Patterns and Neuropathological Mechanisms
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in all degrees of injury severity mainly induces deviant cognitive, emotional and behavioral alterations that lead to their respective disorders. This brief overview strives to define the variables that determine the risk of occurrence of these disorders and to describe the common patterns of these disorders and their relevant neuropathogenetic mechanism(s). In addi...

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant public health concern in our country, because of placing in top three most common causes of death and substantial direct and indirect costs to society. The incidence of TBI in our country is 1.7 times of international incidence. Traumatic brain injury induced by primary and secondary mechanisms that give rise to death and neurologic morbidity in pat...

Background: Cognitive impairment is a common complication of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury (STBI). One of cognitive problems following STBI is impaired executive functions which involve high-level cognitive processes and their dysfunction can lead to reduced quality of life. Objective: This study aims to investigate the cognitive impairment in men with STBI compared to healthy men. Materials...
